Black in Every Color will occupy the hotel’s street-level gallery on Fifth Avenue, drenching the space in David’s signature Yves Klein-esque blue color, and layering a stream of consciousness onto the walls in a contrasting white. The focal point of the installation features a semi-structured fabric tent with silhouettes of two inhabitants illuminated from within, alluding to homeless individuals finding shelter. Floral elements will surround the structure, adding another dimension to the piece and guiding the viewer’s eye to the installation’s focus.

David Sabastian noted that “[the] last thing the world needs is another T shirt, another wall with another abstract painting on it, another window display, another catchy pop song on the radio, another anything unless it can directly affect the psyche and consciousness of our decaying society. Art can change the world, it just depends on the intention of the artist.”

Commentary on social issues, particularly homelessness and shelter insecurity, is integral to David Sabastian’s work – personal experience with these circumstances at various times in his childhood has lent an honest yet hopeful tone to his art. In addition to shedding light on these realities, Sabastian works closely with various shelters and local community centers to provide financial and materiel support to those in need. This inspired the creation of his fashion label, Skidrow Fashion, taking its name from the downtown Los Angeles neighborhood known for its large homeless community.
